abstract

according to non-existence of accurate inspection tools on various steps of design and construction of buildings in the past, also due to any change in function of some structures and finally of seismic activities of residential regions of the country, vulnerability assessment of existing structures is necessary. evaluation of vulnerability of the structures is classified in two categories, quantitative and quantitative methods. in qualitative methods, the vulnerability of the structures is investigated exactly and in details. in this paper a quantitative method based on japanese structural code is used to evaluate the vulnerability of a few concrete buildings in urmia city. in this method, two parameters named structural seismic capacity index is and lateral load capacity index q are introduced for each story. then, by determining limitation for these two parameters the vulnerability of the buildings can be assessed.

Damage Assessment of Reinforced Concrete Buildings Considering Irregularities (RESEARCH NOTE)

Structural damage can be controlled in performance based seismic design (PBSD) according to the requirement under a certain hazard level. During strong ground motion (GM) such buildings suffer minor to major damages depending on the shaking level of GM. The available damage assessment methods are complex, tedious and time-consuming procedure. In the present study, a simplified empirical model h...

Probabilistic assessment of the seismic damage in reinforced concrete buildings

The main objective of this article is to assess the expected seismic damage in reinforced concrete buildings from a probabilistic point of view by using Monte Carlo simulation. To do that, the seismic behavior of the building is studied by using random capacity obtained by considering the mechanical properties of the materials as random variables. Starting from the capacity curves, one can obta...

Evaluation of Seismic Vulnerability of Reinforced Concrete Buildings Adjacent to the Deep Excavations

In this study, the effect of deep excavation on the seismic response of RC moment resisting building systems has been studied. Deep excavation can cause significant changes in the stress and strain levels of soil environment and also changes in the propagation of seismic waves. This leads to permanent displacements in the foundation system. In this study, three RC building systems, i.e. 5, 10, ...

Earthquake Resistant Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings

This paper briefly reviews the development of earthquake resistant design of buildings. The state-of-the-art of seismic design is discussed from the viewpoint of the performance criteria of buildings. These are (a) serviceability from frequent minor-intensity earthquake motions, (b) repairability from an infrequent but major-intensity earthquake motion, and (c) life safety from the maximum poss...

Lightning-Generated Fields in Reinforced concrete Buildings

This contribution presents a study, model and validation of the amplitudes of the residual fields inside a one-story building for different locations of lightning impacts. The special case where a second gridded structure exist inside the main building, forming a box-in-the-box configuration, is analyzed. We show also that formulas for magnetic field attenuation found in the relevant IEC docume...
